What are the main muscles involved when lifting in a lineout?

And what exercises are there for those muscles?

  1. If your lifting, the real power should come from your hips and legs. I say should because allot of people bend at the lower back before the actual lift. Not only is this horrible for your back, but your losing allot of power. Before the lift, bend at the knees, and get your arms underneath the jumper, minimizing the bend in your elbow as much as possible. The trick here is to make sure your lift isn't a bicep curl, but more of a squat. I don't care how strong your arms are, your legs are stronger. When in the gym, you should get advice from power lifters. learn how to do the basic power lifting moves they do. when you see them, you'll know why. when on the pitch, it will be just replacing the weights with the jumper.

  2. It depends

I assume you meen a proper lineout

    i.e with lifting

if you are lifting (so you are probably a prop or second row) then its going to be:

Biceps/Triceps and Calf and Thigh muscles

For the arm muscles you want to do things like press ups and weight reps

for the leg muscles rowing machines and excercise bikes seem like a good idea

If you are being lifted (i.e probably a flanker)

then again you probably want to focus on leg muscles

    by doing the above excercises

    good luck!
