Museum inscriptions? Is it a loan or a gift?Confused.?

Question

I was at the museum the other day and next to a painting there was information on it. It said is was a loan of "..society" and also a gift of Mr an Mrs so and so.

for another painting it said it was a: Purchase, Grant from "place" and also a donation from Mr so and so. How does that work? Someone please explain.
