Mushtaq Ahmed joins Surrey for a month-long contract –Cricket News Update
Former Pakistani leg-spinner and current http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mushtaq-Ahmed-c78096, has signed a one-month contract with English County club, Surrey, as their “coach and mentor”- a deal effective from June 20.
The agreement will bring together http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851, and Mushtaq for the first time, after the duo previously worked together at Sussex, where Adams was the skipper. Both jointly helped the outfit to its first County Championship title
in 2003 before emulating similar success in 2006 and 2007.
"He will be a magic guy to have around in terms of the environment in the dressing room and is one of the best people I've ever come across in terms of assessing the mood of a side and having a positive influence on tactics both before and during a game,"
Adams said.
The decision to bring the current English mentor was made on Adams' insistence, who wanted some of the young spinners to benefit and learn under the guidance of the former Men in Green spinner, while adding that working closely with someone of Mushtaq’s
calibre will help the young generation fine tune their raw abilities.
"We have a few young spinners at the club at the moment so there is also plenty of work to be done there as well. We’ve got him here for a month and we’ll make sure we’ll work him hard – I’ve told him it’s going to be the same as when I captained him, he’ll
be getting through 45-50 overs a day,”added Adams.
Mushtaq has a wealth of experience playing under English conditions - representing the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sussex-c852. His county career is marked with distinguished success – having taken 598 wickets in all competition, while having the
privilege of claiming over 100 wickets in two county seasons (2003, 2006).
The right-arm bowler has not played international cricket since 2003. During his 14-year career, he has played 52 Tests and 144 ODIs matches - grabbing 346 scalps collectively. He was also the key member of the Green Shirts, which won the 1992 World Cup.
He has further been named as the Wisden Cricketer of the year in 1997.
