Former Men In Green spinner Mushtaq Ahmed’s name has popped up among leading candidates for the vacant bowling coach position, which is expected to be fulfilled before the team's trip to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 next month.
Mushtaq, who is currently working with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board’s officials and has discussed taking over the available post with the national team.
"Mushtaq has met with the Board Chairman and discussed the possibility of taking over as bowling coach and working with head coach," one source told.
Mushie was appointed as a spin consultant for the English side in October 2008 and has obtained adequate experience while passing on his own expertise to the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Monty-Panesar-c2024, who have made significant strides under his guidance with
Swann widely regarded as the best off-spinner in world cricket today.
"Many officials in the Board are impressed with the experience Mushtaq has obtained and also as a bowling consultant with the England team in the last two three years," the source said.
The 41-year-old spinner has played almost 200 international matches between 1989 and 2003 and has grabbed 346 scalps collectively. He also remained prolific in First-class cricket, picking a whopping 1407 wickets in 309 matches.
Mushtaq has already coached Pakistan in the past, after which a lucrative offer by the English Cricket Board (ECB) lured him to switch allegiance.
However, the sources have revealed that the former googly-specialist has not applied on official grounds after the PCB advertised the vacant post, with a deadline date of 23rd March.
The coaching committee held its first meeting on Saturday March 7, to review the applications being sent in by some of the local and foreign coaches.
The committee which includes former Test captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Intikhab-Alam-c64380; however, didn’t reveal the names of the foreign applicants and will shortlist the most suitable candidate before making the final selection.
“It was the first meeting of the committee in which 11 candidates, including some foreigners, submitted their profiles, but the committee will take a decision on merit after examining potential of each and every candidate," Alam said.
