Music Editing HELP??

Okay im really into music.I want to learn how to edit music tracks for some local bands.Whats the best way i can go about doing this?of course i dont have a a professional studio..but i have a nice home built computer.that should work.what are some guides that can get me started in this?and some programs im gonna need.i really want to overall clean up already recorded Cd's and early previews of local bands that have no access to studios, i wanna make them sound better.please help thanks:]...eventually i would like to be able to record and mix musicso any info on recording would be widely accepted.
