I want to get my brother some computer software which will help him compose music. Are there any good programs, that you recomend? Any software which you can connect a keyboard to so you can just play the notes and the software will compose them onto sheet music?

  1. I think you might like Sibelius.  It's a music notation software and will transcribe rhythms, notes, etc from a MIDI keyboard, MIDI guitar, and even from a standard QWERTY keyboard.

As an alternative (although I prefer Sibelius) you could also check out Finale. One reason I prefer Sibelius is the price ($129. suggested retail with a student version for $99. vs Finale at $600.)

You could also check out these freeware hosting sites for music notation software.  You might find an open source project that is compatible with Sibelius and Finale.
