Music... Um, technology? (I think!)?

Question

I'm really interested in music technology (I think that's what you'd call it?) where say if a band is playing, you control all the volume and can do all the cool effects on the guitars and stuff... And be able to do really awesome remixes on the computer and stuff...

But I have no idea where to start!

it called sound engineering. you can go to collage for this but they dont do live only studio and its very expensive. e mail me if you need more advise.
