Music at wedding????

I'm considering not having a DJ at our wedding. My fiance's brother is a computer tech that runs his own audio/visual company so he has a HUGE collection of music and can always get anything that we request. I'm not saying I want him to be a DJ because he's one of the groomsmen, but he can set up predone music on the computer. But if I opt not to have a DJ who would be someone that I could use to get the party going?

  1. see if your fiance's brother would be willing to show one of the wedding guests how to set up the equipment, so he doesn't have to do it since he's busy being a groomsman.  then you can have your friend do that during the reception and make sure to buy them a small gift as a thank you.

  2. Have a friend be the MC for the night. That is what my friend is doing for her sisters wedding. She is already married, so in her culture she isn't included as one of the bridesmaids - so, they gave her the job of MC for the night. If he can have everything set up all it would take is someone who can start/stop the equipment and announce the dances, etc. Shouldn't be to hard to do...

  3. Maybe get another family member or close friend who you would like to include & has a big personality but is not necessarily in the wedding party do it. We are getting a DJ/master of ceremonies & I almost wish we went that route & saved $$. But it was only $750 for our guy for 5 hours, so that's not too bad I guess. Good luck & congrats!

  4. We're having a small, intimate wedding (close friends and family only) and we're not having a DJ. We're hooking up our iPod in our reception room, and we're lucky because there are surround-sound speakers, so we don't even need to rent those.

We're also having various family members be the Emcee for the night. We're having  them volunteer to make certain announcements (a great way to involve family members who couldn't be in the wedding party). We're creating a list of who's saying what and when, and passing them out to those involved, and making sure they know exactly what to do and when. Our day-of wedding coordinator will also have a copy of t his list, and knows that if someone starts to run late, or forgets, she'll be there to give them reminders.

We just thought this was such a great way to save money and make the reception more personal. Each family member will be cracking small (but well-intentioned) jokes and making it very personalized. So, rather than some stranger saying, "The bride and groom will now cut the cake," guests will here, "Excuse me everyone, it's now time to cut the cake. And as the mother of the bride, I can assure you that Josh better get used to doing the serving because we all know Sam can't cook a meal to save her life." To me, that's more fun.

I've also heard from our coordinator and our venue that DJs are kind of a dying thing, and the iPod (or a friend of the family) is becoming more and more popular.
