Question:

Music cd format help?

I have a rather complicated situation here. Recently, I have bought a car and I have discovered that the cd player does not read mp3 format and it is very hard to remove and change the player. I have plenty of mp3 cds and I am looking to re-record them on to a format that would be readable in my car. Is there a big size cd that I can record all my tracks on or is there a certain format which makes the music files take up less space so that I can have as many of my tracks on 1 cd?

  1. What kind of car is it? (Cavalier?) You could go down to a local audio shop and have them put in a new cd player for $150.

If MP3 doesn't work on the one you have try .wav files. these should work. With the cd player you have now there will be no way to get all your songs onto one cd because all cd's are the same size. roughly 700MB.

With some of the newer fancier cd players you can actually burn songs to dvds' giving you 4.7 GB or they might have adapters for mp3 players like ipods.

  2. Music CD are very standardized. They are all 650 MB or 700 MB at most.  YOu have no choice of compression level, quality, etc.  You can store 74 minutes of music.

    PERIOD.

    Good Luck...

  3. short answer...NO. if it does not read MP3 then you need the old standby audio cd, but as mentioned that is only 74 minutes max. not near what a MP3 disc will hold.

However, if you have a mp3 player there are adaptors that plug the player into the cars antenna directly with a simple switch to go between radio and mp3 player. it is a bit of work to install, but not imposible, even if your not car audio savy. there is one power wire, one ground wire, and the antenna wire, most of witch is usually found right behing the glove box.

IF you have a mp3 player this could be the best solution for you. the units cost <100 and you keep the factory look, but added functionally of listening to all your tunes from the player...

If you don't then your stuck with 74 minutes max, or buying a new radio, it really is that simple.
