Question:

Music choices for an MP3 Player?

My 9 year old son just received his first MP3 Player, and we are spending some time ripping music from borrowed CD's.

I agreed for him to choose the songs but I get the final veto. For example, no rap, no songs with swearing or adult lyrics.

Am I being too controlling? I want him to have some freedom, but I am really fearful of today's media and the influence the lyrics have on young children.

  1. Nope, at nine you're doing the right thing. As he gets older, he should have more say in the matter, but for now, keep it up! My nine year old (girl) has Carrie Underwood, a bunch of Disney stuff, some Rascall Flats, and some Kidz Bop stuff on her MP3 player. Oh, one more tip: a good place to get get cds to rip for him is the library! We do that a lot!

  2. I would make sure there wasn't any foul language, or lyrics about abuse or violence. Other than that, I think any genre of music is fine. I don't think you're being too controlling.

  3. I do not think that you are too controlling because a 9 year old kid is not having the maturity yet to make distinction between what is good and what is bad .Nowadays media is influencing kids very much and this, unfortunately, not in the right way..and we can see many examples like that. It is too much of violence either verbal  or phisical ,and i thnk none of us wants our kid to be violent. We do have to give the guidelines until they can make the difference . So a controlled freedom it is a right chioce at this age.

At least this is my opinion.

  4. He's 9. It's good to monitor what he listens to. But I don't see why there would be no rap alowd? As long as there are no adult lyrics or swearing than any genre should be ok. Don't try to keep him away from different types of music.

  5. Yes you are being too controlling.  I do not believe that a nine year old should listen to music with very inappropriate lyrics, however music is about freedom of expression.  If he likes music that you deem " inappropriate " talk to him, ask him why he likes the music explain to him what the lyrics mean and why you are offended by them.

  6. You are not being too controlling or protective.your a parent who wants to protect her son, nothing wrong with that. I think he should have clean rap. Also if it is a clean song but has one or two cuse words, you can always get the clean versions. Also, if he likes artist from disney, those songs are clean and easy to find. Your son is lucky to have parents who care about him enough to buy an mp3 player at 9. I was  12 when I got my first. Best of luck!
