Question:

Music in Canada?

by  |  earlier

Would it be extremely difficult for a folk/country duo from Australia/Ireland with sample CDs and previous performance experience to get small paid (even if not very well paid) music gigs in Canada? Or would it be totally unheard of? Is there much of a following for folksy acoustic music there, or is it an unpopular genre in Canada? Or could busking be an option?

Thanks for any help you can provide! I apologise for this question being a bit silly; I'm trying to think of ways to augment travel funds! :)

  1. Busking is probably the best option, as the rest of the field looks very crowded.  Small-town prairies and the East Coast (especially the Irish) might be a better choice than the big cities.

    Best wishes.

  2. I,m Australian....but when visiting Vancouver I noticed they loved live folk music,There were buskers  and live bands in the market place.it was lovely.Being a lover of James Taylor etc I thought it was wonderfull.

  3. busking at sky train & seabus  you must audition first  allso granville island   This is in Vancouver  lots of pubs have live music

  4. Ah no, try the Maritimes. They are hugely celtic, it is "New Scotland" afterall. Halifax Nova Scotia has one of the largest busker festivals inthe world as well.

  6. There are music festivals, specializing in or including folk music, and I'm sure the musicians get paid. The Vancouver Folk Festival is one of the bigger ones in Canada, but folk music is especially popular in the North. We love to have performers from other countries! Here are some links for you.

As for busking people can make money at it in the cities, but not that much. You might need a permit, so check with the city or town hall. Good luck and see you in Canada soon. =:.)

  7. you would need to apply for a work permit
