Question:

Music instructors...Time to start?

So I woke up this morning to the sound of my 3 year old banging pot lids together, playing Schubert's 8th Symphony...clear as day. I suppose it's never too early to start professional music lessons. How shall I supplement her lessons, though? She's pretty good at ID-ing the most fundamental of classical pieces, but I'd like for her to get better at identifying the individual instruments within a piece as she hears them. For instance, she often confuses the cello and the bass, the flute and the clarinet. Besides Peter and the Wolf and Little/ Baby Einsteins, is there a program that helps develop listening skills?

I should probably add that although it seems as though I may have high expectations for my pre-schooler, it is she that never stops asking questions. I'm having a difficult time keeping up with her burning desire to learn!

  1. My university has a music program for very young children. It is never too early to learn!

  2. Though she might be a little too young still, I would suggest Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concert Series. That is what got me interested in music at a very young age (6-7).

  3. I remember when I was about 2 my mother used to take me to a toddlers music class where we played around on musical instrument and sung songs etc. you should see if there is anything like that in your area!

When I was four I had my heart set on playing the bag pipes (lol) but when I discovered that I was to small I picked violin and have been playing it ever since (along with various other musical instruments I picked up along the way)!

Nobodies ever to young to enjoy music! :)

  4. I'd suggest finding a Kindermusic program or something similar that's nearby.  This is a great option for a 3 year old...and is fantastic for pre-private lessons.

If she's that interested, I'd say to just expose her to a lot of things.  If you think she can behave...live concerts would be great.

Hook 'em while they're young...I will need people to support me when I finally grow up!
