does a musician have to know music theory in order to write songs?

why is music theory important in writing and creating music?

does a mechanic have to know how engines work to repair a car? why is knowing how engines work important in assembling a truck?

its important to know theory so you know what the heck you are doing!!!you can write songs without the basic knowledge, but when you have problems (like something you wrote sounds like c**p) you will not know how to fix it or what you did wrong.

Music theory is something every musician should know to get anywhere in their music career (or hobby). Fully understanding every little thing about music and how it works will DEFINITELY help a musician in writing songs. What music theory does is that it makes you dive deeper into music than you wouldn't have thought was possible, and that, I believe, makes the musician a much better musician and have a better connection to this thing called music.

i don't know music theory fully. i been playing guitar a while and I could write songs. its easy. but learning it would probably make me better.

theory is important for notation. so unless you are writing to a high standard to dont need it to write (as long as you have a basic grasp of notation etc)

also if you want to do grades on any instrument, do get to grade 6 you need to do grade 5 theory.
