Musical Flair impresses at Calder and looks to repeat the performance in the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland
The 2-year-old Sal Santoro trained colt, Musical Flair, owned by Kathleen Amaya, has earned a trip to Keeneland to participate in the Grade 3, $150,000 Bourbon Stakes on 9 October, 2011, where he will face 4 other juvenile colts.
The Grade 3 Bourbon Stakes is run on turf over a distance of 1 1/16 miles only for 2-year-old colts, and the race in the past has seen winners like Gio Ponti and the eventual Grade 2 winner Interactif.
The son of Songandaprayer, out of Highwaytohappiness, tried the maiden special weight race at Calder racecourse on 8 July, 2011, but couldn’t impress much and wasn’t able to break his maiden in the first attempt, as he finished 8th.
His second attempt came a month later on 12 August, 2011, at Calder racecourse under a new jockey, Jesus Rios, who guided the juvenile colt to break his maiden in the second attempt in a 5 ½ furlong dash.
The pair downed their opponents and topped the five and a half furlongs in 1 minute and 7.14 seconds, which was enough for his connections to try him in another five furlong dash, but switching the surface to grass from dirt.
Musical Flair under the same jockey Jesus Rios, took on the field of 9 juvenile sprinters and won the five furlong Turf Dash Stakes at Calder racecourse on 27 August, and convinced his connections to send him to Keeneland.
Musical Flair topped the five furlong distance in 57.48 seconds and won it by 2 ¾ lengths, defeating Martini Madness and Big Dreams, who finished second and third, respectively.
In the cool fall weather, Musical Flair arrived at Keeneland to conquer the Bourbon Stakes field. The colt is right now under the supervision of the exercise rider Luis Cordero.
The exercise rider Luis Cordero on 3 October, took out Musical Flair for a two mile gallop, over the main Keeneland track, and has been reported to handle the Poly Track well.
The entries for the Bourbon Stakes will be announced on 6 October, which will give the field a more definitive look, as Jesus Rios will be aboard the juvenile colt yet again.
