Musical Romance and Pomeroys Pistol to lock horns in the Sunshine Millions Filly-Mare Sprint at Gulfstream Park
After the year's end, many racegoers and fans are much anticipating new rivalries for added entertainment. There is one catching everybody’s attention between Charm the Maker and Killer Graces, but the highly anticipated rivalry between Musical Romance and Pomeroys Pistol will surely take the cake.
The two fillies take on each other in the most anticipated race in the series, the Sunshine Millions Filly-Mare Sprint on 28 January, 2012, at Gulfstream Park.
The race drew a field of seven 4-year-old and above fillies to fight it out over a distance of six furlongs, but the real showdown will be between Musical Romance, who ended the 2011 season with a win in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at about seven furlongs on 4 November, 2011, at Churchill Downs.
The race helped Musical Romance bag the Eclipse Award for Champion Female Sprinter, and in the same race, Pomeroys Pistol finished fourth, behind Her Smile in third, and Switch in second.
The Amy Tarrant trained Florida bred daughter of Pomeroy, out of mare Prettyatthetable by Point Given, Pomeroys Pistol redeemed herself by winning the next start after her Breeders’ Cup disappointment, in the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes, defeating Pica Slew in second, and Strike the Moon in third, while covering the 6 furlong distance at Gulfstream Park in 1 minute and 9.35 seconds.
The 5-year-old mare, Musical Romance, is trained by William Kaplan, and the Florida bred champion is the daughter of Concorde’s Tune, out of mare Candlelightdinner by Slew Gin Fizz.
The Pinnacle Racing Stable owned mare will be out to prove a lot when she takes the field in the Sunshine Millions Filly-Mare Sprint.
She has 33 career starts and out of those, the mare has gone on to win 9, of which the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint being the highlight of her career.
Musical Romance came into the Breeders’ Cup exiting a second place finish to Holiday for Kitten in the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland, and prior to that race, she won the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters at Presque Isle Downs over six and a half furlongs.
It’s not a rare scenario in horse racing these days that rivalries spur up, but this time around the new season has to offer so much more and it is only the beginning.
