Musical Romance getting into Championship form ahead of her title defense of the BC Filly and Mare Sprint
The 5-year-old mare, Musical Romance, co-owned by trainer Bill Kaplan in partnership with Pinnacle Racing Stable has had a pretty good 2012 season so far, with seven starts she has not finished worse than fourth, and that too on two occasions.
The Champion mare by Concorde’s Tune, Musical Romance is now focused on defending her title in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita Park on 2 November, 2012.
The Bill Kaplan trained filly continued to work toward her Santa Anita start at Calder Casino & Race Course, as he breezed six furlongs in 1 minute and 14 1/5 seconds.
The trainer was pleased with proceedings regarding Musical Romance building up toward yet another sweep of the BC Filly and Mare Sprint. He said everything is going according to plan, and that the filly will come out on the track on 25 October to post another
work.
The 25 October work will be Musical Romance’s last work at Calder & Casino Race Course, as the mare will be shipped to Kentucky, and from there she will reach Southern California on 27 October.
"We don't have anything serious planned for her once she gets out there; we'll obviously be taking her to the track to jog and we'll give her a good five-eighths gallop one of the days," the trainer said.
Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud Farms, Musical Romance has gone on to post 12 victories out her 40 career starts, and this year she won the Grade 2 Information Stakes at Gulfstream Park at seven furlongs, and at her homebase in Calder, she went on to down
the Grade 1 Princess Rooney Handicap, and now she is currently exiting victory in the Mike Sherman Memorial Stakes at Calder.
Out of Slew Gin Fizz’s mare Candlelightdinner, Musical Romance might be sold in the Three Chimneys consignment to the Nov. 5 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November select mixed sale in Lexington, and Bill Kaplan has mixed emotions over the mare’s final start.
"I'm very much looking forward to it," Kaplan said. "But it is a little bittersweet because it's been so great having her in the barn. She certainly made my job a lot more fun, and it's a little difficult thinking about her being gone."
