Question:

Musical Theater Song Choices?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I've made it through to the finals of the York Region Talent Search , and in the pervious semi-finals , I performed "Easy As Life - Aida"

I'd say I'm a mezzo-soprano singer

I'd like to keep the song into a more mid range/chesty tone rather than my head voice to give a stronger impact .

I start to go into my headvoice after the second D after middle C ...

Could anyone suggest a few songs for me?

WICKED IS OUT OF THE QUESTION

I'm looking for something along the same lines as Aida ..

It must be somewhat upbeat with a strong finish

Thanks.

  1. Well done!!

How about Astonishing from Little Women (it's a 'wower')

or on my own from les miserable

take me or leave me from rent

My friend's actually in a very similar situation to you, she got into the top 100 for teen idol in australia and she's planning to sing Astonishing next

do you have any recommendations for her, she's really into show tunes as well and let's just say i think she can sing the final solo in seasons of love from rent better than the real thing

but look i'm texting my friend who's the gun singer for ideas right now so i'll add more songs later :)

    EDIT:

ok so my friend said looking at the degree of difficulty there's a really nice ballad in toy story

    or something from oliver :D

  2. I suppose it depends on your personality... If you do well with meaningful songs, the song "Without You" from Rent is a real tear-jerker if you do it right and with enough passion/emotion, and it gives a very powerful message, also in your range. Otherwise if you're into more upbeat songs, you could try something like "I'd Do Anything" from Oliver. Try looking up some lyrics to find one you can relate to. You always give a better performance if you can relate to what you're performing. That's a proven fact. Good luck and congrats, let me know how it goes and what you pick!!! You know where to find me :)

  3. Wow, Congrats!

Try something from The last 5 years, such as "Still Hurting"

Or maybe a song from Les Miserables or Rent.

    Good Luck:D

  4. That's great news! Congratulations! You definitely need to pick a great song to showcase your talent even further. People have many different opinions when it comes to choosing an audition song, but I am going to throw some things out there that would work for your range and might be something you can impress with. I have been in theater for 13 years, and work as a professional choreographer (I sing and act in shows, too) in LA and have sat on many audition panels. Selling the song is the most important, and we can look past a cliche choice if it's well done.

    "Unusual Way" from NINE

    "Day by Day" from GODSPELL

    "Cabaret" from CABARET

    "Blow Gabriel Blow"

    "Anything Goes" from ANYTHING GOES

"What I Did for Love" from A CHORUS LINE

"The Riddle" from THE SCARLET PIMPERNELL

(you can sing the male and female parts)

Those are some basics and some randoms. Maybe you'll find something you like. Best of luck to you..I'm sure it will be fabulous!
