Question:

Musical Theatre Advice!!?

In my musical theatre class for grade 12 we have to put on a musical to perform to the whole school. We hold auditions for the entire school and we act as the directors for the musical we choose. My question is what musical do you think would be a good choice to put on? Keep in mind that it has to be appropriate for school and the actors/actresses casted are students in high school (thus we probably wouldn't be able to do something like Phantom simply because the talent is not there). We also have a very limited budget. Any suggestions??

  1. I presume (and hope!) you do this legally and get the rights for whatever show you perform?!  If so, then there are some shows that people will want to do which you'll have to rule out because the rights aren't available - Wicked, Phantom, Hairspray, RENT, Legally Blonde, Spring Awakening.  My suggestions would be some of the "classic" musicals:

    - Anything Goes

    - Oklahoma!

    - Guys and Dolls

    - Pirates of Penzance

    - West Side Story (hard to sing though, plus you need a fantastic orchestra!)

    - South Pacific

    - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

    - Fiddler on the Roof

    - Kiss Me, Kate

    - Once Upon A Mattress

    - Children of Eden (not a classic, but a good school show)

    - Bye Bye Birdie

  2. I would suggest Once On This Island, because it can hold a very large cast, is not very long, and it is an AMAZING show!

  3. Once On This Island!! Its mostly music so it doesnt involve a lot of acting/lines just singing. You can have a BIG cast and the dancing is really fun. Plus the music is awesome. It doesnt require a big set either (good for budget) You can just use cardboard and paint it for most of the stuff and costumes are easy cause you just have to wear "island like" clothes like peasant skirts or blouses.

  4. I've always loved west side story..that wouldn't be too hard on the budget since most of takes place on the street.

  5. Beauty and the Beast

    Sound of Music

    Into the Woods Jr.

    The Music Man

    West Side Story

    Fiddler On the Roof

  6. Fiddler on the Roof is wonderful and pretty low budget.
