Question:

Musical Theatre Auditions?

I am looking for a 16 bar audition. I am 16 years old and I am a soprano but I do not want something super high because at auditions I get a little nervous. I am auditioning for a group not a specific musical but i would like to have an up tempo song. Preferable not anything that is really popular right now like Hairspray. Any suggestions that fit into this description?

  1. You learn the whole song, then "give them your best 16", don't only learn 16 bars of a song.

If you are a mezzo-soprano, there are a ton of Broadway sheet music anthologies that are geared specifically toward your voice part.

    Here's a great one:

Make sure the song is appropriate in tone, style and range to what you're auditioning for (picking a song by the same composer but a different show is always a good bet).

And actually, nerves make the high notes easier because your vocal chords contract, but the control you have over them can be hit or miss.

Just enjoy singing the song.  If you have fun, so will the people listening/auditioning you.

  2. Try auditioning with "Jacob and sons" from Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Fabulous song that is not overdone.
