  1. It is not legal to post free sheet music on the internet for well-known songs, I'm sorry.

I'm glad that you are refraining from using High School Musical and Hairspray. They are very overused, so kudos to you for thinking outside the box!

If I were an alto, I would choose:

"Ten Cents a Dance" -Simple Simon

    and

    "Nothing" -A Chorus Line

I wish you the best of luck with your audition! If you still are having trouble, feel free to contact me at heyitsmehermionegranger@yahoo.com

  2. Choose one of two possibilities from Into the Woods :

The Baker's Wife's song "Maybe They're Magic"  or Red Riding Hood's song "I Know Things Now" (if you're young enough.)

    AND

Martha's beautiful song from The Secret Garden:

    "Hold On"

These songs would have good contrast.  "Magic"  and "I Know" are fast and witty; "Hold On" is emotionally inspiring and powerful.

I looked for free music, but I don't think you'll find stuff from recent musicals for free because it's not in the public domain.

  3. A fun song from "Mame" is "The Man in the Moon Is a Lady" sung originally by Bea Arthur (Maud.)

You might also listen to "Open a New Window" also from "Mame" sung originally by Angela Lansbury.

She and Bea did a great duet "Bosom Buddies." "Mame" is full of great songs!

  4. If you're willing to pay a little bit, you can find entire books (some with CDs to sing with) of alto music at some music stores.

    My personal favorite songs:

"Adelaide's Lament" from Guys and Dolls--character, upbeat

"Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" from Evita--both slower

    "Cabaret" (Cabaret)--slower and sultry

"Freddy My Love" from Grease--character, upbeat

Look for The Singers Musical Theatre Anthology for mezzo-soprano/belter. It's a bit of an investment ($20) but you'll be armed with new audtion pieces for a good while.

  5. "One Hundred Easy Ways" (Wonderful Town)

"Just One Step" (Songs for a New World)

    "I'm Not That Girl" (Wicked)

    "Mein Herr" (Cabaret)

"My New Philosophy" (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown)

"Stars and the Moon" (Songs for a New World)

"Surabaya Santa" (Songs for a New World)

"Who Will Love Me As I Am?" (Side Show)

These are for mezzo-soprano/belters/altos, I believe. You might want to make sure they aren't too high for you. I would search for "free download sheet music" and the name of the song, perhaps. You could also go to a university nearby where they have a music library-- my university has free anthologies with songs to copy.

  6. upbeat: Waiting for Life from Once On This Island

                  Popular from Wicked

slow: On My Own from Les Miserables

I'm Not That Girl from Wicked

I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables

Missing You My Bill from Civil War

in the middle?: Maybe This Time from Cabaret

look on freehandmusic.com sometimes they have free music, but usually you have to pay for the song you want... but you can choose which key you want it in!
