Question:

Musicals with non-soprano lead?

Hey I'm trying to find a list of musicals a school could do for their school play that has a female alto lead or a dance heavy lead. My g/f is really bummed out because she loves to do the play, she's a senior, and she's an amazing dancer but is really depressed that most leads are for sopranos, and obviously she's an alto. She's an excellent dancer and very good singer but every show she looks at seems to have a soprano lead. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thank you.

  1. Wicked Elphaba is like... a mezzo/alto.

RENT Mimi is an alto, and Joanne is an alto. There is a high school edition of this.

    Les Miserables Fantine and Eponinne.

    Aida Aida is mezzo/alto

Jekyll and Hyde Lucy is mezzo/alto

Into the Woods The Baker's Wife can be played as Soprano or alto.

  2. Try Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Millie is a Mezzo-Soprano (but the songs don't go very high) and she does a great deal of dancing.

Sweeney Todd is another great musical with a Alto female lead. But no dancing.

Hope that gives you some ideas! =)

  3. There are 2 really good roles for her that immediately come to mind.

The first is Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie.  She is definitely an alto, and has a few dance solos.  Its a fun role.

The other is Lola in d**n Yankees.  She is very s**y, dancy, and the singing part is in the lower end.

  4. My high school just did Anything Goes last spring and the lead role, Reno, is not only for an alto singer, but also for a dancer!  The whole show is a pretty dance heavy actually, though mostly tap dancing.  Seems to me like it would be the perfect musical for her.
