Musicians' Union?

Question

Is there still such a thing as a Musicians' Union? I'm just curious because my dad mentions it a lot, but he was never a member, he just had a friend that was. What exactly is their purpose? Who are their members... are they people who graduated from Berklee, for example, or did they audition? Thanks if you can answer my question.

If you plan to make a career and compose etc..., then it is good to join the union. They control the wages and the hourly wages and the music industry goes by those norms.

They cannot underpay you if you are a union member. Anybody can join the union as long as you pay your yearly fee.
