I kinda always thought the veil looked both daft and demeaning, as though a woman is ashamed of her face.

I don't wear it yet but i observe the hijab inshallah i will observe the niqab which is not compulsory but sunnah. The niqab allows women to stand for her sole purpose in life to love allah (swt) to observe modesty and not care about what others think about her. Many women wear it as a form of modesty and so they can presever their beauty for their husbands and not catch the attention of men, cos we don't want it if someone else gets the spotlight its fine by me. The spotlight ain't always such a good thing becuase rapes, assaults and insults sometyms take place.

niqab (the right spelling) is optional , meaning no one have to wear it , me i think it's not necessary , but it's not bad if a woman is very beautiful .

niqab is not demeaning to women , by the contrary , women has the gift of beauty , men don't . so she's like a precious pearl that have an option to keep herself from strangers eyesight .

veil is not only an Islamic costume , but also was used for royal families and aristocrat people in Europe.

and socially it's better that when a woman is very beautiful that she covers her beauty if she wants, so she is not annoyed by men , and so that men are not attracted to her looks only .

but overall it is an optional thing that is made only by her choice

No, i dont wear niqab. in islam, a woman should cover everything except her hands and face. but some women prefer wearing it, because theyre more comfortable with it. its not demeaning at all, because its their own choice to wear it.

I believe the opposite of what you state i feel more respected with a veil more protected.

The most beautiful  part of a women is her face so by wearing  a veil, a woman prevents other men from looking at her and having unpleasant thoughts

Yes I wear Niqab, Abaya and Hijab. I believe that the Muslim women of today should try to be like the wives of prophet Muhammad(Salla Allahu alahi Wa Salaam), and that means covering our faces with Niqab. I personally am beautiful and don't like men or women staring at me so I wear Niqab.  Niqab does not restrict me. I sometimes wear Niqab in my house as well to get used to it.  I believe that the Hadiths of Bukhari and Muslim, and Sura 24:60, Sura 24:31 and Sura 33:59 require all Muslim women and girls to cover like crows as soon as they reach 9 years or reach puberty whichever comes first.  Bukhari and Muslim are the most strong and authentic Hadiths and don't forget the prophet(Salla Allahu alahi Wa Salaam) ordered us to follow the strong Hadiths. Where would the Ummah be without the strong Hadiths?
