Muslims who smoke? ?

Question

Since Muslims are not to take in any intoxicants, how is it that Muslims are permitted to smoke? True there's not any instant effects, but doctors have proven that smoking is pretty much a slow suicide.

This question isn't to bash smokers--I was just asking in general how somethings are Haram and some aren't.

This isn't an answer to your question, obviously, but further proof that smoking is prohibited.

I think it is decreed forbidden because it only harms your body and even if it contains some good, its harm is more than its good which is also explained in the Qur'an for wine:

002.219 يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ نَفْعِهِمَا وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنْفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ كَذَلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمُ الآيَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُونَ

002.219 They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: "In them is great sin, and some profit, for men; but the sin is greater than the profit." They ask thee how much they are to spend; Say: "What is beyond your needs." Thus doth Allah Make clear to you His Signs: In order that ye may consider-

Moreover, the Qur'an also warns us again things which are "Khabith" which means bad and harmful and tells us to refrain from them even if they seem more appealing:

005.100 قُلْ لا يَسْتَوِي الْخَبِيثُ وَالطَّيِّبُ وَلَوْ أَعْجَبَكَ كَثْرَةُ الْخَبِيثِ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ يَا أُولِي الألْبَابِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

005.100 Say: "Not equal are things that are bad and things that are good, even though the abundance of the bad may dazzle thee; so fear Allah, O ye that understand; that (so) ye may prosper."

And I think no doctor will feel constrained to tell you that smoking kills and the Qur'an clearly tells believers not to lead to their own destruction or not to kill themselves:

002.195 وَأَنْفِقُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ وَأَحْسِنُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

002.195 And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good.

Al-Qur'an, 002.195 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])

004.029 يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ إِلا أَنْ تَكُونَ تِجَارَةً عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِنْكُمْ وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًا

004.029 O ye who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities: But let there be amongst you Traffic and trade by mutual good-will: Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah hath been to you Most Merciful!

Ewww n smoking turns your teeth yellow n makes your breath stink n gets your face all wrinkly.. why would anyone want that?

Just Some says smoking is Makrooh but most Ulmaah says it is haram!!

Allah says, "...make not your own hands contribute to your destruction..." (Surah al-Baqarah 2:195); "...nor kill yourselves..." (Surah al-Nisaa 4:29). So i would say it is clearly haram!!

am a converted muslim and i do smoke, i never heard its haram but just unliked. but then what about she-sha (water pipe)? this is big in some muslim traditions and its alot worse than smoking is this to an unliked act? im not trying to justify my smoking habit that i will try to quit Inshallah im just curious

but smokin dosent intoxicate u directly

ive got an uncle who smokes 2 packs a day

and his 68

and ive got another uncle who smokes hublie bublie (20 times worse then a cigiratte) everyday

and his 65

its up to Allah (st) when ur gonna go

Smoking is disliked/haram

The act leads to harmful effects, whether noticed or unseen.

It will cause the body to suffer.

The Prophet (s.a.w.) said:

"Do not hurt yourselves nor injure others." (Ahmad & Ibn Majah)

Smoker - was so before i reverted to islam. Of course every one knows by now it is not good for your health..... muslim or not!

But when you are addicted quitting is easier said than done. Inshallah i will some day soon!

As long as i have not managed i might sin, but..... he who is without sin cast the first stone!

well it doesn't get you to lose control of you thoughts, its affect is like tea, it keeps you active and alert.

in the quran wine is described to be present for the good people in heaven, and that wine is described as being such as which does not cloud the mind, so that shows us that those substances are ok which DONT CLOUD YOUR MIND.
