Must I ground an exterior 110 V post lamp. Only two wires are available (no third ground wire)?

The wire is buried under the lawn and underground sprinkler piping and runs from GFCI exterior plugs to post lamp locations (about 100 feet). The lamps use 110VAC compact fluorescents. The wire looks to be about 12 gauge exterior wiring.

  1. if it is going to a GFI, it MUST have a ground wire or the GFI will not work correctly.

You can drive an 8 foot ground rod at the base of the lamp post.

  2. As already mentioned..the reason these post lamps have no ground wire is that they are meant to be put in the ground..they will already be grounded..A ground wire from a service center is grounded by...driving a 8 foot ground rod in the ground..the post is automatically grounded when You set them in the ground..
