Must go Places in Vietnam...?

Question

I'm planning to go to Vietnam this summer, I want to know "must go" places and "must eat" food. Any advice or suggestions? I appreciate it a lot.

My mom goes there almost every summer.

Must go places:

Temples, Ha Long Bay, errr. ETC. ETC.

Must eat food:

Pho, duh. But you probably already know that. Just, try to eat in the better looking places. You can easily get food poisoning there, especially because your body may not be used to the things they use to cook.

Ho Chi Minh City? (sp?)

Also...my brother went to Vietnam last year and he looked like he had a lot of fun at this ice park - there was this gigantic SLIDE made entirely out of ice! The problem is...I dunno where it was or what it was called. -_-

There are many places for you to go. As a Vietnamese, I knew how hot it will be in HCMC this summer, however, it's the most interesting city. Besides, if you wanna know about Vietnam's tradition, try to get to Hue, Hoian or Hanoi. About food, each area got its own traditional dish, but you really cannot miss Pho. It's so special for both Vietnamese people and foreigners. Vietnam's tourism is often so noisy during summer holidays so hope that you'll have a great trip there.

I agree 100% with Tom T's response earlier, one thing I'd like to add in is the Mekong Delta. Absolutely amazing! We did a 3 days tour with Sinh Cafe from HCMC for a staggering US$16 (LOL) and were completely blown away by the area. The people were incredibly friendly, the scenery astounding.. and of course the food was great :) That, along with Hoi An were my two favourite places.

There are plenty place should visit in Viet Nam but i think mainly :

Hanoi, Ha long Bay, Sapa, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Mui Ne, Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh city, Mekong Delta.

For the Food : Each destination have their own style and different tasty but in Hanoi there s a restaurant call Ngon Restaurant, you can found many traditional food from the North to the South there.

If you're going to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), you HAVE to go to Quan An Ngon Restaurant, what the owner did was to find the best Vietnamese street vendors, put them all in this large French style villa and turn it into what I think is THE place to eat in HCMC. You can order from one waiter, who will be able to get you food from about 20 different stalls located around the restaurant, the food was fantastic and the average meal is about $3.00-$5.00 US. The atmosphere was great, it's always crowded with locals and tourists, but because of the size of the place, the wait was never more than a few minutes. Highly recommeded!

the only thing that i can add to all these great answers is ha tien and phu quoc. they are at the southern most tip of vietnam, on the cambodian border, and both have airports. you can drive to ha tien from saigon but the trip takes about 9 hours. add 2 more for the boat ride to phu quoc.

the beaches are fabulous and are quite similiar to ha long bay with limestone formations rising up from the water.

i think you will end up being charged a "foriegn" rate for your hotel rooms. my vietnamese wife never pays more than about $15 a night. of course she gets the room while i wait in a cafe.

as far as food there, shrimp, clams and seafood.

by the way, if you are going with several people, there is a beach house for rent on phu quoc. it sleeps 8 and has 5 acres of beachfront land with its own pool. comes with a car,driver and a chef. for about $250 a night you can live like bill gates. i'll look for the address.

I would say Nha Trang, Ba Ria, Bai Dau, Ho Chi Minh City are the best places to go. You have to try the fruit because it is very rich.

Here's the reply I gave to a similar question before:

"Vietnam. It will be my second visit in recent years. We will be there for three weeks later this year and plan to visit:

1. Ho Chi Minh City (the former Saigon): The largest city and the most dynamic economic area of Vietnam. On our agenda: The Reunification Hall (the Old Independence Palace) where the last American-backed regime surrendered to liberation forces on April 30, 1975. Ben Thanh Market: Easily the largest market place in the world. Cholon: Vietnam's Chinatown. Museum of War Remnants: displays of war crimes committed by the American side.

2. Cu Chi Tunnels: The tunnel system that sheltered ressitance fighters during the war against the Americans. Not far from Saigon.

3. Mui Ne Resort: A seaside resort area full of beautiful and luxurious hotels/bungalos. Near the city of Phan Thiet and just 160 miles North of Saigon.

4. Vinpearl Resort: Another 150 miles up the coast from Mui Ne. Near the City of Nha Trang. The diving capital of Vietnam. Even better than in Thailand.

5. Hoian: An old mideaval harbor town once thriving with traders from other countries and hosted several international settlements. 8. Sapa: the hill town with a great local market where you can buy local craft products from colorfully-garbed inhabitants who are members of Vietnam's mountain minorities. We have also arranged for a visit to a minority village.

9. Dienbienphu: In the Northwest of Northern Vietnam about 200 miles from Hanoi. Now a modern town but it was a frontier village in 1954 and site of the greatest battle wage by the Vietnamese against the French occupiers. The French were thouroughly whipped and sued for peace in Geneva. They left Northern Vietnam by May of 1955 and Southern Vietnam a year later.

10. Hanoi: The ancient capital of Vietnam, much older than Hue. A beautiful city on the Red River and with several beautiful lakes. We'll visit the Ho Chi Minh Musoleum (where Vietnam first president's enbalmed remains can be seen), the Museum of Military History, the original/mideaval "36 streets" where even more traditional craft and modern products can be purchased at great prices (the women in our group will go beserk over this shopping opportunity). Also the Temple of Literature: the 900-year-old university, the first Vietnamese institution of higher learning.
