Must i use a outlet box if hanging a ceiling fan???

this is going under a patio roof...it has a metal support beam running down the middle where i will be hanging the fan....the wire is pulled to the spot...i wanna use the mounting bracket the fan came with..can i

  1. The electric feed and fan wires should be in a outlet box, so even if you can support the fan without one, the issue is safety from electrical fire.

    Boxes come in a lot of sizes, I'll bet one will fit.


  2. most ceiling fans come with a mounting bracket made to fit a celing fan electrical box. You don't use a regular outlet box for a ceiling fan. It is called a ceiling fan box and should be ul approved.

  4. The mounting bracket for a ceiling fan is made to go between ceiling brackets between wood rafters, not an aluminum bracket. An outdoor  fan seems redundant in an outdoor setting. If properly supported, I don't see a problem with using what is there as long as you use the hanging bracket for the fan.

  5. Yes and No..........the rules would tell you yes......but if it's your house.......just support it well from the beam so it doesn't fall on your head and do a good job making up the wiring and tape all joints in case you roof leaks........enjoy.
