  1. No, it is not a necessity to emulate Western culture to become modern, but it is common.

Western culture, with an emphasis on technology and mass communication, is the most materialistic.  Developing regions of the world could obtain both technology and mass communication without the influence of Western culture, but seldom do.

It is easier for the elite (who were often educated in the West) to take the culture back with them along with any social contacts that were developed.  This is less difficult than adopting the education, technology and communicating techniques to their home countries.

  2. The western world has a major influence over the rest of the world. It's unfortunate that most of that influence isn't positive and makes others feel inferior. I believe there can be a meeting of the modern and other parts of the world without losing their identity.

  3. It is the ever expanding ancient Greek thought.

  4. Unfortunately, because of electronic technology, that seems to be the case!

  5. It's been called the "coca-cola" culture. Western styles, entertainment, food, etc. are now copied world-wide. The Taliban tried to purge Afghanistan of Western influences by banning radios, music and Western styles and other movements attempt the same. France has a program to purge "le french fry" and other words from their language. North Korea strictly controls what the population knows at the same time the elite have access to the Internet and luxury goods.

Like it or not it's become a de facto world wide goal of successful people.
