Must one stand up during the British national anthem?

In the States, we're taught to stand up every time the national anthem is played. Is it the same in Britain for "God Save the Queen" when played in public?

Some do and some don't.

It always used to be played in cinemas many years ago at the end of the program.

This was the signal for a mass rush for the exit before the music began.

It's a rather dreary, uninspiring tune and was written for a German monarch. It doesn't even mention the country.

It's not held in very high regard.

Yes, and all other national anthems for that matter. People do that in international events, especially the Olympics. It shows respect for that nation even though you are not a citizen of it. Respect begets respect.

A British citizen is expected to stand upon hearing 'God Save the Queen'. Exemptions are few but do include those undergoing operations, flying planes and eating Stilton cheese. Contrary to popular belief, there is no exemption for a person on the lavatory.

Some people do but others don't.

It depends which part of UK you are in.

In some of Scotland they refuse to name God Save the Queen as their National Anthem.

England's anthem is umofficially "Land of Hope & Glory".

Scotland's is "Flower of Scotland".

After Scotland gains its independence it will start using Flower of Scotland as its official anthem & the flag will revert Yellow & Red Lion Rampant Scotland Flag or Blue & White St. Andrews Flag..

It's traditional unless of course you can't stand. Generally if the National Anthem is to be played then people are asked to stand. Men are asked to uncover their head unless a head covering is part of their religion (Judaism, Sikhism)

As far as I know, the English don't really use their national anthem.

Anthem protocol varies from country to country, but usually everyone--whatever his or her allegiance or nationality--stands during the playing of any national anthem, and gentlemen remove their hats.  Take your cues from when the national anthems are played at the Olympics.

I don't think you have to, not like in America but if you have any respect and decency you would. I certainly do stand up!

Of course you must, if you are at a major/public event. It is the same everywhere, if you are at a public event such as a sporting event or something like that. It is a common courtesy which is expected of people everywhere across the globe, for any national anthem, be it your own country's, or another country's anthem.
