Question:

Mustangs In The Snow? MADNESS!

I'm in love with the looks of a mustang so much that I can't look at any other car. BUT, I live in Minnesota...it snows basically from october to late march. It's an 02 Mustang, and I was wondering if anyone else has had experience of driving them in the snow. I'm just concerned about being stuck all the time in my parking lot, or spinning out on the drive way...and possible killing myself lol.

  1. All powerful rear wheel driving vehicles are terrible in the snow.  The newer Mustang offers all wheel dirve.  Buy a hooptie for the smow and enjoy your mustang in the summer.  If you wreck your hoopie you wont get mad.

  2. A lot of people freak out about rear wheel drive in snow, but it's usually unwarranted.

When you buy your Mustang, opt for the limited slip rear differential and make sure you have traction control.  When it gets cold, keep something heavy in the trunk.  You want to keep as much weight on the drive tires as you can.  Buy snow tires.  You can go on tirerack.com and order them in the fall (they tend to sell out early).

A lot of times, tires called "all season" really mean "all seasons in southern California".  When you're buying snow tires, you'll want to go slightly narrower than the stock tires.  I think the Mustang GT's tires are 225 millimeters so you'll want 215.

The important thing is to take your time and drive sensibly.

  3. I have 2 of them.  The automatic trans car without limited slip is worthless in the winter. It will get stuck in 2 inches of snow on flat ground.  The 5 speed car with limited slip gets around decent with careful use of the throttle, but it will swap ends before you know what happened if you make even a small mistake.

They can be driven in snow, but you won't enjoy it.

  4. I had an 01 mustang and it sucked in the snow. I never took it to the snow for a 2nd time.

If I were you, I'd think about getting something with 4 wheel drive.

    Chains suck.

  5. I used to live in Eden Prairie. They had two seasons: "Winter" and "Winter will be back momentarily."

The Mustang is fundamentally a nose-heavy car. Snow tires are a given, and you may want to put something heavy in the trunk to give those snow tires a little more bite.

When driving, do everything smoothly. No twitching the steering wheel, and pretdend there are eggs under the accelerator and brake. Look well ahead, and plan for any deceleration or acceleration.

It won't be a lot of fun driving in snow, but you should be able to kep your car and your nerves intact.

  6. if you drive intelligently you should have no issues. i drove a 64 falcon futura, pulling a 600lb trailer and with a partially broken transmission, in the snow with no issues, save a minor one of not being able to get over one snow hump trying to get into a gas station. i have also driven a 79 fairmont in the snow, and the only issue i had then was sliding halfway through an intersection because i was too aggressive with the brakes. another vehicle which i drive in the snow was an 84 F250 2 wheel drive truck. the only issue i had with that truck was trying to climb a steep hill too slowly.

as i said, if you drive intelligently you can get through just about any weather and road conditions you come across.
