Legendary Sri Lankan off-spinner, Muttiah Muralitharan has asked his former team-mate Hashan Tillakaratne to prove his allegations regarding match fixing. He also solicited that if Hashan does not have anything to prove then he shouldn’t carry this debate any further.
Muralitharan said, “I don’t know why he has said this. If somebody is making such claims, he should first give enough proof to support them, otherwise someone can sue him”.
According to the former Sri Lankan skipper, Tillakaratne, match fixing has been spinning in Sri Lankan cricket since 1992.
Last week, Hashan started a controversy during a television programme when he claimed to have some proof on match fixing in Sri Lankan cricket.
Tillakaratne said, "I can tell this in agreement with my conscience. Match fixing is not something that started happening yesterday or today. According to my knowledge, it happened since 1992. I say this with great responsibility".
As per Muralitharan, he had never been approached by any bookie for participation in illegal activities.
“In any case, I will tell this to ICC’s anti corruption unit only. There is a code and all the players follow that,” he added.
The allegations from former skipper and current Sri Lankan politician Tillakaratne, sparked a controversial debate amongst the current Lankan players.
Sri Lankan wicketkeeper batsman, Kumar Sangakkara, who led the Lankan team to the final of the recent ICC World Cup 2011, is looking forward to Hashan coming up and proving his claims.
The Sri Lankan veteran, Mahela Jayawardene is also waiting for Tillakaratne to come up with considerable evidence to back up his accusations.
The great spinner, Muralitharan, did not believe that Tillakaratne’s allegations have mottled the name of Sri Lankan cricket. Hashan has merely alleged something which he needs to prove in order to back his stance.
Muralitharan is in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 these days for the Indian Premier League after taking retirement from International Cricket.
