Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan has expressed his intent to feature in the next season of the Australian Big Bash League (BBL), with the spin wizard eyeing a stint with the Melbourne Renegades.
The spinner, who holds the world-record for most wickets in the history of the game (800 Test wickets and 534 ODI scalps), has remained a permanent feature in the domestic T20 circuit around the world after playing his final international match in the last
year’s World Cup final.
The champion cricketer, who lately became a T20 specialist, represented Royal Challengers Banglore in possibly his last appearance in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL), and is currently playing for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gloucestershire-c785 in Friends Life T20 competition.
Last year, the star bowler didn’t opt for the BBL and instead preferred to play for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 during the New Zealand’s domestic T20 tournament. However, the Lankan great had expressed his wish to play in the Australian competition before his retirement
from all forms of the game.
"Yes, I'm going to play there next summer," Muralitharan told the Age this week. "It is going to be maybe the last year of mine so I may as well come and enjoy the Big Bash. I am still bowling well."
The star cricketer spoke about his working relationships with Australian and Renegades duo of Andrew Mc Donald and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, and is eager for a reunion in the second edition of the Big Bash league.
This is not the first time the 40-year-old has fancied playing for Aussie T20 cricket as he was signed by Victoria in 2009, but his international commitments saw the deal fell through.
If the Sri Lankan joins the Renegades, and with a possible signing of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shane-Keith-Warne-c89672 for the Melbourne Stars, it would set up a likely clash between the two giants, renewing their rivalry for one last time on the field of cricket.
The Renegades, who failed to sign http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918, need a major crowd puller to stay competitive however, the team cannot sign Murali for now as the BBL teams are required to wait till the contracting window opens on July 9.
