Why is trading volume data not available for mutual funds when searching on yahoo or bloomberg as with stocks? Are mutual fund volumes published anywhere? Or why are they not avaialble on most financial websites?

  1. Because they are a fund and not a stock. So they don't trade. For example if somebody wanted to take out $1k from a fund and you bought $1k worth of a fund, in reality all that happens is your money went to the other person and their shares in the fund transferred to you. There was no actual "trade".

But they DO track inflows and outflows to funds. Being a contrarian investor I believe at the tops and bottoms the majority is always wrong. And the majority uses mutual funds. "Dumb" money.

So I follow the inflows and outflows looking for turning points in the markets. And I found this site that tracks it:

  2. Mutual funds don't really "trade".  You buy from the fund manager who creates additional shares.

ETFs are another story and volume data is available from the standard sites.
