Mutual Fund investment options for less than $1000?

I'm an 18 year old college freshman, looking to get a head start in investing. The problem is, I don't have the resources needed for most mutual funds (over $1000). Does anyone know of a mutual fund(s) that can satisfy my requirements?

  1. You can buy closed end and index etfs for how every much you wish.  The only catch is the brokerage commission to buy them which will run you $7.00 at Scottrade.  Here is a link to your selections.

American Funds has a $500 minimum but also a 5.5% front end load. You can buy those through Scottrade also without any broker commission.  They get the load.  You would be somewhat better off buying the etfs perhaps based on fees.

  4. With T. Rowe Price you can start with as little as $50 as long as you make at least $50 automatic payments until you reach their minimums. www.troweprice.com
