Mutual funds? inflation and measures to control it? equity? can anybody please tell me about these..?

i mean if you say inflation is at 7% now.. how is it measured?.. how does it affect the people? how does it influence a countries relations with another country? what are mutual funds? how does one read the stock market columns in the paper... i honsetly do not know much.. but would like to learn.. so for starters if somebody could tell me a little about these... id be grateful. thanks.
