Mwalimu Nyerere International tournament in Tanzania – Africa Volleyball News
The United Republic of Tanzania celebrated its 50th Independence Anniversary earlier this month. The Independence Day featured an array of entertaining activities and the jubilation is still on for the whole month of December.
In this connection, the Tanzania Amateur Volleyball Association (TAVA) organized a volleyball tournament in the honour of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere. The Hindu Mandal venue in Moshi, Kilimanjaro served as the venue for the
double-gender volleyball event, which started off on Thursday, December 15 and is likely to be closed on Sunday.
A total of 25 club teams joined the competition, 12 of which came from the neighbouring East African countries. They battled it out with 13 domestic club teams. Kenya was one of the prominent participants of campaign with seven teams in the tournament, while
Uganda and Rwanda sent three and two teams, respectively.
Mombasa was represented by JACARANDA Hotels' Volleyball Club, which staged good action on the first day of the tournament. Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC), Kampala City Council (KCC) and Nkumba University played under the flag of Uganda, while Rwanda
was represented by the army outfit, APR, in both male and female categories.
The Prisons and Tanga Central, the two tops of the Tanzania, fought for home legacy. The volleyball giants, Prison, opened the tournament by defeating domestic rival Tanga Central on Thursday. Other teams from Tanzania included Jeshi Stars, JKT, Kijichi
Club, Makongo and Lord Baden secondary schools (Dar es Salaam), Mzinga (Morogoro), Mafunzo, Polisi (Zanzibar), Rukwa volleyball team (Rukwa) and hosts, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) University and Moshi University College of Co-operative and
Business Studies (MUCCOBS).
It turned out to be the first major regional volleyball event to have been hosted in the Tanzania this season. It is a great sign towards effective promotion and development of volleyball in Tanzania at the domestic level.
Alfred Selengia, the TAVA Chairman of Development Commission, is the main person behind the inception of this event. He is the Chairman of the tournament's organising committee in Tanzania. He put a lot of effort to organise this event and deserves to be
played.
