Question:

My 10 y.o. son learned to play tennis with his dominant hand on top. Should he change it?

My son (now 10) started playing tennis at 4y.o. He choked up on the racket with his dominant hand and used his left hand for balance. He has a 2 handed forehand/backhand. He's learned to really stroke the ball over the years. Now I signed him up for a tennis class (hoping it will fuel the tennis fire in him.) But the class instructor wants him to hit a 1 handed forehand. The result is my sons ability has dramatically dropped and he is frustrated playing with people he would easily beat before. Now my son wants to quit. I tried (unsuccessfully) to switch his dominant hand to the bottom more than once in the past but figured it was like golf...whatever grip your comfortable with. Any advice?

  1. You need not listen to the tennis coach. There are some pros who play double handed ( both forehand and backhand ), and are doing pretty well.

  2. Just let your sun play whatever way he wants to heel have more fun and his results will be better

  3. You should try and get him to change it because playing like that has limitations and may cause him not to be able to reach his potential. Also it may lead to injuries when he begins to play at a higher level because the pace is faster.

However the most important thing is for him to stay interested and enjoy himself. It depends what you and he wants to get out of tennis. Remember Junior tennis results count for little you should focus on developing weapons i order to be able to compete at mens tennis

  4. he should stick to what he usually does. each person has a different way of doin things. like my strokes are definetly different from others. when my coach tried to change it, i kept losin. now i'm back to my original strokes, and i'm beating people.

  5. i would say that evryone is different when they play tennis so let your son play how he wants ''not dangerously'' and ignore the tennis coach tell him that ur son will loose intrest bcse of u!!!

or let the coach see him play how he dosent want him to play then make him watch how he wants to play.

(i admit that a forehand stroke is important and that you will need that shot)

    back up.....

if your son looses intrest go to a squash court and have a ''hit''

see if he likes it then get him coaching....

i did it now i play for county!!!
