  1. It's not too late for your daughter, the other person is wrong.  Also, it doesn't take 3-4 years, your daughter can improve significantly in six weeks.  Try www.rfbd.org: Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic.  I think they have a free membership going on right now, but you have to sign up by July 31, and it's only through October to try it and see.  She can get books on CD's, listen to them, and follow along in her book.  That way, she can pick up her reading speed in a few weeks.  It's been proven to work.

  2. Hi

I can't help you with a tutor as such, but if you go to www.dyslexia.com you can find a facilitator for the Davis Dyslexia Program. These guys are awesome! They view dyslexia as a gift - a different way of looking at the world which tends to make people with dyslexia very good at practical hands-on stuff, but it causes problems with written stuff etc. If you can afford to get help from these Davis people, it will be well worth it. They don't try to cure dyslexia, but they have a unique way of helping dyslexics.

If you can't do that, then make sure you get a tutor who is experienced in working with dyslexic people. Going over and over and over the same work doesn't help! Dyslexic people benefit from being taught in different ways from how classroom teachers normally teach.

    Good luck!

  3. Your daughter is a little late to get diagnosed, but you can help support her now.  Dyslexic students usually have above-average intelligence and many are gifted artistically or physically as well.  However, it usually takes 3-4 years of intensive tutoring to help dyslexics "catch up" with their peers.  For that intensive tutoring, going to a generic tutoring center like Score or Sylvan won't help.  You need an Orton-Gillingham tutor (some programs are Barton http://www.bartonreading.com/ - you can e-mail them for a list of certified tutors in your area - or Slingerland http://slingerland.org/parents/tutors.ht...  In the mean time, you can get your child's textbooks on CD from Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic® http://www.rfbd.org/index.htm and should be able to get your child's classes modified to include help with note-taking (the teacher can send home a copy of her master or make copies of a partner's notes to help study), extra time for test-taking, etc.  Hope that helps!
