Last night, I cleaned out the filter (fluval 404) and then went to bed. Luckily, my dogs woke me up to take them outside so I passed by the fish tank and noticed it had a few inches less of water. So I looked at the filter and discovered it was leaking a little. I immediately disconnected it. This morning I come to fish tank (it has about 20-25 fish) and it only has 1/4 water left in it and my carpet is drenched! I can't tell where there is a leak. The back of this large fish tank is against the wall so I can't check that area. What do i do? It seems I don't have a lot of time.

I'm opting to just give away my fish. I'm going to have to move in a couple months and I don't think I'm able to take it with me. However, I don't know if want the fish going to just any random stranger. I don't think a pet store would take?!them

  1. The pet store is the equivalent of a random stranger since that is where they will end up.

Place an ad in Craigslist, screen your responses but see if you can find someone to pick them up ASAP.

  2. i had this with fluval. check the rubber seal around the top of the filter, if anything gets on to it it wont seal properly.

also put a small amount of petrolium jelly all round the rubber seal.

put it back together then dry it all round the outside. then check five mins later to see if any water is still streaming dowm the sides. its only small but drains the tank quickly.

if all this fails buy replacement rubber seal. you will find it in the inside of the lid when you take it apart.

  3. petland would take them but they do NOT buy so you should sell

  4. remove all the tubes.   refill the tank.. turn on the heater...   now dismantle the canister. could be as previous replier suggested improper seating of the o-ring seal. although i have never tried putting petroleum jelly. spit works fine for me and my fishhave never complained yet.  recheck the o-rings and all other fittings. unless you have lost a part you should be able torestart your filter with no problem. dont panic, and you're not alone. try 500 gallons in a living room and a very angry spouse

  5. How did you disconnect the 404? Is it possible the water is siphoning back through the filter?

  6. OMG!!! Unfortunate or what....?

Please, don't worry about your carpet for the minute.... just make your fish safe.... put them in bowls, buckets or anything you can with treated water somewhere they will be safe and get someone to help u if u can, b4 u do anything else... at least that way, you can easily look for the leak and then fix the problem... has anyone got a tank too and they can look after them, or an old one you can borrow?

Sorry, i'm scared your fish are gonna die... let us know what happens xxxx
