  1. There are other factors to consider. If she's normally needle shy, that can be it right there. Some people faint from stress. Was she really hungry right then? Was it too stuffy in the room? Was her blood pressure ok? Any other health concerns?

If her doc hasn't already heard about this, let them know ASAP so they can add that to her chart for future reference.

    Good luck!

  2. I still remember passing out after getting a shot when I was 11 or 12.   About 10 minutes after the shot, I passed out while my mom was checking out at the front desk.  I woke up on the ground to the smell of ammonia.  They said it was most likely because I was holding my breath.  And I was holding my breath during the shot - trying to be strong!  What a memory.

  3. Definitely report all symptoms! This is the only way vaccine manufacturers can monitor the side effects! It is our duty as parents to make sure our children are safe. Unfortunately, when it comes to vaccines, MOST doctors are very defensive about it when you bring up any possible reactions or side effects from them. If your pediatrician gave you a handout with info regarding the DTaP, then there is a toll-free number on there that you can call that is specifically for reporting any severe reactions. I would consider your child's reaction severe and would definitely make sure you find a pediatrician who is willing to work with you regarding administering vaccines, spliting them up, not giving certain ones, etc...

  4. My nephew is 12 and had a shot, probably the same one, and fainted while my sister was at the desk paying.  They came to the conclusion that it was "panic" because he was afraid to get the shot to begin with.  The nervous system kind of goes haywire.

  5. Could be she had a reaction to one of the components of the booster, or a preservative in the booster. Did you ask the ER staff?

Your child's pediatrician, or family medicine practitioner, should be told about this reaction and may be able to tell you why it happened.

  6. If she didn't have a reaction to the vaccine itself (and they'd know if she did from blood tests, assuming they did some) then you'll probably never know. Most likely stress - many people keel over after they've been really stressed once the stressful event is over.
