My 12 months old doesn't chew her food when eating.?

Even though my 12 months old has 10 full teeth and about 5 coming out, she loves to swallow her food. If she was eating a piece of chicken for example, 80% of the time she swallows it down without chewing.

Is this normal for babies around her age?

  1. Even though that could be dangerous a lot of kids do it just make sure your watching your child so nothing happens...ex: choking etc..

  2. all kids do this to drive us crazy,my 4 year still has trouble doing this, what you have to do is cut up the meat a little small, and put it in a bowl and she will eat and even chew some of it,she is only one and should not be eating whole foods as yet,but if you are giving her cut it up. thats why the foods we buy for them is crushed up for easy swallowing..but its normal for her to do this..she if  fine..good luck.

  3. My 41 year old husband eats without chewing.  I guess some people never grow out of it.

  4. Kids develope differently. yea it is kinda normal. I used to do the same thing :]

my mum helped me. I used to swallow and not chew because i was tired. so my mum gave me nothing like warm milk or stuff that would cause me to be tired. 12months is a good age to start solid foods. keep them soft though. chiken is'nt ideal for those learning to chew. she is still young and hasnt learnt to chew yet. Her teeth are still coming and it may be causing her pain. maybe thats it. Or maybe the peices are too small for her. but i doubt that, im sure how yu cut it is fine. just cut it up small and let her swallow it. as long as she doesnt choke I dont think there is anything to worry about. If she gets to an age such as 2 or 3 then it may be a concern for solid foods, expeically when you are not around. Give her praise when she does chew! so she knows she is doing a good thing. :]

I'm so sorry if this wasnt helpful.

  5. My daughter did that from about 10 months to about 22 months.  We tried telling her to chew & demonstrating, but she just kept swallowing everything without chewing.  Just keep the pieces of food really small & occasionally say something to her about chewing and she will pick it up eventually.
