Any idea why? I usually pick her up and hold her and say "hunny, ouch, don't do that" What would you do?

  1. i have seen that before. from what i have seen, it is an embarrassment thing (if they get punished) or a fit type of thing if they are told not to do something, like for attention.

some kids i have seen just do it to be silly. i think you did the right thing, i would definitely try to discourage it when it occurs. she could do it on cement or something and really hurt herself.

  2. "I usually pick her up and hold her"

That's why she does it.  You have to ignore her.

  3. Like the first answer said, she's doing it for attention. Babies and toddlers are smarter than people think. She's figured out that if she hits her head on purpose (and it sounds like it's not too hard since you didn't mention her crying) that you'll then pick her up and comfort her. Instead, either A) ignore it in view (if heard of many babies doing this to the point where they did really get hurt because the parent just walked away) or B) tell her NO firmly, move her away from the wall/door and give her something else to do. If you keep this constant, she'll stop.

    Best Wishes =]
