  1. It depends on the regulations of the airline that you book with. Some will allow minors to fly alone as long as you guarantee someone will accompany them to check in and to be there upon arrival. Others insist on you paying for an attendant (VERY expensive). Others dont allow it at all.

Check each companies regulations on their websites.

  2. You need to contact the carrier for the exact "handing off" of your child to the Carrier's Desk, and from them to the pick up person. Each may be different.

Get the exact procedures for your minor to be cared for if there is a lay over between flights, and in case of a no show at the flight's end for some reason.

  3. Airlines typically have their rules posted on their websites in regards to unaccompanied minors.  A flight attendant doesn't sit with them through the whole flight.  The UM is usually handed over to the flight attendants at boarding time.  The f/a will show them to their seat, and go over the safety and emergency procedures with them.  The f/a's are there in case  they need help with something though.  At the end of the flight, the f/a typically hands the UM over to an airport worker, who will then check the ID of the person picking them up from the airport, and voila!  Do check the airlines website before booking the ticket, as some airlines don't offer this service, and some don't allow UMs.  The charge for this is also posted on the website.
