  1. No, at that age they want to be more interactive than passive.

Try buying books with songs and buttons.  My 2 year old loves to read now, but originally he would only sit on my lap for storytime if there was singing or clapping...

  2. Ya know, every kid is different.  Maybe he just doesn't want mom to read it.  My daughter wont sit and listen to me but she does for anyone else.

  3. yes lol very, very normal just read anyway,he listens more than you think :)

  4. Totally normal.  My daughter was the same way.  He may be more visual and if that's case, try to find picture books with interesting pictures that you two can look at together.  Show him a picture and talk to him about it.  When he gets tired of that, let him go on to something else, but look at picture books for a few minutes every day or so.

  5. That is normal. My son did the same thing when he was that age and he is 4 now and still doesn't like to be read to. I did try one thing though. Get some picture books, and let him read to you. Get him to tell you what he thinks is happening in the story. That will get his imagination going. Good Luck!

  6. Being a 14 month old will have a very short attention span. Also your 14 mth old has his sibling to play with him / her which probably is why your first born only had you , so maybe he was calmer. Your second one has you and your older one . I didnt read to my daughter at that age , she is my only one and her attention span was very short and still is , lol , being that young they want to see colors and pictures. I suggest getting a picture puzzle  , the kind with the pegs  to show him what it is . It is easier to learn what this or that is than to read a book. Color pegs are great also , so its not necessary to read to them at this age. Showing them what things are in books that have alot of pictures and easy words.

  7. Totally

  8. Every child is different. the best thing to do is remember at this age he is exploring and defining his own distinct personality- which will be different than your first son's.  Try hard to not compare them. He may not enjoy it now, but eventually he will, I am sure.

Perhaps a different style of book than you have been reading? I cannot suggest not knowing what you have available. One of my son's adored winnie the pooh tales, the other was bored to tears by them and wanted shel silverstein poems. you never know. The fact that you are spending time with them and reading is wonderful! Good job!

  9. Maybe you're trying books that have too many words on a page.  My 17 month old son won't listen to anything with more than a sentence on a page, but he loves books with lots of pictures and will point to the pictures to get me to say the word "tow truck, tractor, fire engine, dump truck . . ."  Trucks and flap books have been the big winner here for months.
