Question:

My 14 week old kitten was spayed 3 weeks ago. Why does she chew on her incision continuously?

My kitten was spayed right before I adopted her. She left her tummy alone for the first couple weeks after getting spayed while there were staples holding the skin together. She had the staples removed last week and she has been chewing on the incision area continously. The hair had started to grow back on her tummy and it has all been chewed off.

Why is she doing this? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

Thank you!

  1. Probably itchy! But if you suspect infection, see vet asap.

  2. check to see if you can tell if it's infected. i would take her back to the vet just to make sure everything is ok.

  3. Her tummy probably just hurts. you can get a cone to put on her head so she cant reach it, but my cat hates that. I don't know what else you can do though.

  4. Skin itches as it heals, and hair itches when it grows in.  Thats not a place she can scratch comfortably so she is using her teeth to get rid of the irritant

She needs a cone to keep her away from the incision, otherwise she might give herself an infection.
