My 14 year old son is scared of thunder and lightning

I can understand lightning because it kills people, but is there a way he can get over thunder? If a storm comes he turns his ipod up all the way so he cant here it.

I'm a lot older than 14 and thunder scares me too.  People deal with things in their own way.

No big deal. People are afraid of different things. My almost 18-year-old son is ridiculously afraid of the dark. And I have an awful phobia of granddaddy longlegs spiders!!! LOL It's okay for him to be afraid of thunder.......

I am scared of it and I am 25. That sounds stupid but I put the weather channel on every time there is a storm and make sure there isn't a tornado. Also I do not use the restroom, take a shower, do the dishes or stand by the window, or talk on the phone when it is lightening. I have to be real careful and not let my 9month old see me nervous b/c I don't want him to be scarred like I was.

I'm scared of vampires and werewolves even though I know they don't exist, and CPR dummies. We've all got our weirdnesses. It's not hampering his life, so don't worry.

It used to frighten me a little when I was that age, I cant really remember why but I soon grew out of it, I'm now 26 and I love a good storm, their fascinating to watch. He may grow out of it but if he doesn't then its one of them things, as long as its not making an impact on his life then I wouldn't worry too much about it x

Its very common so don't worry about it. Time will heal this fear. Just be understanding

Many people, even adults, are scared of thunder.  And really, why should it matter if he's afraid?  He's handling it himself by turning up his iPod.  It's not as if he's running into your room and asking to sleep in your bed.  Just let him be.

Don't worry loads of people are scared of it. My sister is 13 and will do anything so that she can't hear the thunder and she shuts her eyes so she can't see the lightning.
