my son has weened himself off his bedtime bottle and apparently off milk as well. he will sip it if its in front of him but he won't drink much more. he'll fuss about being thirsty but thats the one thing he won't drink. Is it true that I can supplement with hard cheeses and yogurts? if so, how much would equal what he was getting from the milk, e.g. how much cheese and yogurt, etc would give him the same nutrition as an 8oz bottle 2-3x per day? (thats what he used to drink).

He likes most everything else, but milk seems to be his least favourite thing to drink.

  1. I had the same problem with my son.  He will be three in September.  He would drink milk out of his bottle but nothing else.  My doctor said she was concerned about vit. D.  There are other juices that have vit. D added that he can drink as long as he is getting his dairy else where.    Motts Plus is one of them.  I tried everything to get him to drink his milk, letting him pick out his own sippy cup, mixing it with flavor (strawberry and choc.).  Nothing seemed to work.  I then found these Organic flavored milks.  I know that once you hear the word organic you want to say not another one.  But these milks are cool.  They are by Life way Organics, called Pro Bugs.  They come in three different flavors and in pouches like capries sun.  My sun calls them his buggie milks and thinks it is something special to have.  We treat them like treats.  Now we have to stop him from drinking to much.  You can find them at some grocery stores.  We get ours at Whole Foods.  Lifeway has a web site.  They have all their info on there.  Good like I know how you feel.

  2. My daughter did the same thing and I switched her to soy for a little while and then slowly added milk back in to it. It worked! She drinks it fine now, but I think that it was upsetting her stomach for a while.

  3. i stopped drinking milk at a young age as well.

  4. Drs say whole milk, but my son didn't like the way that the fat made his mouth and throat sticky.  I gave him 2% and added whole milk yogurt or hard cheese as a snack or side dish every other day or so. He's 3 1/2 and will drink only about 3 oz of plain milk at one time, so I add Hershey's syrup and he chugs it-- 10 oz a day.  He eats cheese with his lunch almost every day (he's a Lunchable junkie).  The dr told me that kids up to 4 yrs of age really need only about 12 oz a day-- 2 6 oz servings.  So, try giving him lighter fat content, and break it up into smaller servings, more often.  He needs a lot less than you probably think.  Subbing the cheese and giving whole-milk yogurt is a good idea.
