she is prone to insulin resistance. Her blood sugars are normal but the other day she was dizzy and threw up and her blood sugar was 289 but went down to 98. blood pressure normal. She has the rash that you get when you are insulin resistant. Could it be something else or is she developing diabetes. Are there any other blood tests I need to have the doc. run on her?

  1. The primary test now-a-days for diabetes is called A1C.  This is a relatively new test (3-4 years ago).  For DIGNOSIS, it replaces the

"finger stick" test (the test you did with your meter).

The A1C test measures the AVERAGE blood sugar over a 90 day period.  Thus, all the normal highs and lows are accounted form [The finger stick only measure the blood sugar at the instant you do the test].  The A1C is much more accurate for DIAGNOSING diabetes.

The A1C test is quick and simple.  Most doctors do it in their office in 5-10 minutes IF they have the equipment.  otherwise, they take a blood sample and send to the alb for 2-3 days.

A NORMAL A1C rading is between 5 and 6.  If the A1C reading is NORMAL then your daughter probably does not have diabetes.

If the A1C reading is above 7, then the doctor will want to do other test to deteremine the possibility of diabetes or hyperglycemia.

if the A1C reading is below 5, your daughter may be HYPOGLYCEMIC -- blood sugar is too low.  In this case the patient needs to eat more nutritrious meals, and eat everything assigned -- they are not getting enough food.

Any illness will cause a "spike" in blood sugar reading -  and 300 is not uncommon even in normal people.  The secret is how fast they return to normal (80-120).  And it sounds like your daughter made it.

No one is "prone to" insulin resistence -- either your are, or you are not -- and if you are, then you are diabetic.  Who made this diagnosis? Frankly, a diabetic (like yourself) should NEVER try to diagnosis other people using their own meter.  Diabetes diagnosis is a job for a doctor.

Personally, I think your daughter just "fell ill" -- maybe even a touch of food poisoning, or summer flu.  The klood sugar readings would have been normal -- a very high spike during the illness (the body needs fuel to heal itself), that returned to normal after the vomiting.

Diabetes can be diagnosed ONLY through blood tests at the doctor office -- primarly the A1C test and if necessary the Glucose Toleracne Test -- but the Finger Stick test is no longer a good diagnostic tool -- it is for CONTROL of the disease only.

Have your doctor perform the proper tests, and follow his advice.  DO NOT attempt to diagnose illnesses by yourself.

BTW: Being diabetic yourself, the doctor should be perform the A1C test on YOU 3-4 times a year.  This shows you how much control you actually have over your disease.

  2. Whoa-wait a minute. You are saying your daughter has been checked for diabetes, the tests came back normal? How do you know she is insulin resistant? How do you know to check her blood sugar? 289 is not a normal blood sugar. More info. please  Edit: I still don't understand how you know she is insulin resistant. Are you basing that on guesswork because of the rash? Either way, call her Dr. with the symptoms and information you have and ask for an appointment.

  3. 289 is a hyperglycemic though you said that it dropped down to 98 so went back to normal. i suggest that you monitor her Blood sugar level regularly. And suggest to do HGT or the Hemoglucose Test for accurate findings. Easy to perform. Though your info. is not so clever, more info's please and be specific. If you have a type 2 DM it is possible that your daughter might have that too. "Hereditary". If you find abnormal findings, consult your doctor immediately. Hope this could help.

  4. Have them check her thyroid.

  5. What kind of doctor are you taking her to?  I think that you should take her to an endocrinologist, they are specialists in diabetes and hormones in general.  I was diagnosed in 2001 and I saw one for the first time a month ago and I found out I was taking my insulin wrong thanks to going to just family doctors.  They will run tests that a family doctor won't even think about taking.  Think about, I think that you will find out exactly what is wrong with her.
