My 19 month old daughter just got diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech which is a speech delay.?

I live in Phoenix, AZ and I am looking for anybody that lives in the area with the same thing or anybody that can give much needed advice for a scarred mom. Resources and financial information on Apraxia would also be great. Thanks

I live in Baltimore Maryland and my little brother was diagnosed with the same thing at age 3. My parents got a speech therapist for him and he now attends a school with a program that has a half day schedule for children with speech delay.Everyone in his class shares the same problem.He is doing very well there. He is now four and talks a lot more. The sooner you put your daughter into speech classes or with speech therapists,the sooner you will start to see your child talking.

my son has been tenatively diagnosed with the same thing. He only said about 10 words at 2 years old. He has been in speech for about 5 months now and has made great progress. He now says more than 150 words and knows more than 50 sign language signs. If you are not connected with early intervention/birth to 3 in your area, you need to contact them. They screened my son, and are providing him with free speech therapy. a few months before he turns 3 he will be tested for special ed preschool where he will also recieve therapy for free (if he qualifies).

basically Apraxia is a "programming error". basically they know what they want to say, they just can't make the words come out. Sort of like when adults have a stroke and lose the ability to speak. My son has problems making his tongue move in certain ways. His therapist has him doing oral-motor excersizes...things like trying to l**k candy powder off places on his lips, or sticking his tongue out to l**k candy held in front of him. I have even put things in a small container (like a shot glass) for him to HAVE to stick his tongue out to get. His therapist just copied some small flash cards for me to use at home...she uses them with him during his therapy. feel free to contact me for support...I can even copy the flash cards for you and snail-mail them to you.
