I have a 1982 Honda 200. The tail light works but the break light doesnt. Also, my throttle sticks from time to time. I jokingly laugh and say it's my cruse control, never the less it needs fixed. I have never worked on a motorcycle before but I have some experience in cars. I have to have it working in two weeks. HELP!

  1. Most common fault is a sticking rear brake light switch.

The switch is connected to the rear brake pedal by a long spring.

When the pedal is pressed, the spring pulls the rod out of the switch to activate it.

Sometimes the rod needs lubrication to slide back into the switch, or the switch simply needs to be adjusted.

Adjust the switch by turning the big plastic nut.

To check which switch is causing the problem, unplug one at a time (front switch is at the front brake lever on the handlebars - the plug is inside of the headlight case).

The sticking throttle could be dirt on the handlebars, the grip is rubbing against the end of the bars, or a frayed throttle cable - remove and inspect the cable.

Do not use any lubricant inside of the throttle - it will collect dirt & dust.

Remove the throttle cable from the throttle grip (might have to remove the cable from the carb).

With the throttle housing off and the throttle on the bars - spin the throttle (whip it around).

    It should spin freely.

With the throttle and throttle housing mounted to the handlebars - turn the throttle to see if the end of the grip is rubbing on the bar end.

  2. If the light doesn't come on with either brake check the bulb first, if the filament is flapping or disconnected replace it, then progress to checking the mechanical switches. The throttle could be a tired return spring in the carb, you can (and should) lube all cable, it is sitting in cups at either end it will only attract minimal dirt.

Start with the basic easy stuff, take components off one at a time and keep them in order of removal – makes it easier to replace them.

  3. I reckon your brake switch aint workin'.Change it - its pretty cheap.Your 'cruise control' is due to rusted cable.Change it - its cheap too.
